Many thanks for your prompt response but I suspect our version of sysam is not what you are expecting:

C:\Sybase\SYSAM-2_0\bin>sysam.bat uninstall

Stopping the SYSAM Service

The SYSAM service is not started.

Removing the SYSAM service

The SYSAM service has been removed.

C:\Sybase\SYSAM-2_0\bin>sysam.bat configure IPv4

Usage: sysam [action] [args...]

action is Action to perform. Can be one of the following:

       start:     The SYSAM service will be started.

       stop:      The SYSAM service will be stopped.

       status:    Display the status of SYSAM Service.

       diag:      Diagnone problems with check-out.

       reread:    Re-read license files.

       install:   The SYSAM service will be created and started.

       uninstall: The SYSAM service will be stopped and deleted.

       reinstall: The SYSAM service will be re-created and re-started.

               i.e. stopped, deleted, created, started.

       help:      Output this usage information.

               This is the default action if [action] is not specified.

[args...] are optional task specific arguments.

       Use sysam help action for argument details
